Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a stirring address at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, where she received the organization's Chairman's Award.

This is Harris' first major public appearance since leaving office as Vice President, stepping out with her husband Doug Emhoff by her side. She took the stage and gave an inspiring speech in reverence of what is occurring in America.

"Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy and ask, 'What do we do now?'" Harris said. "But we know exactly what to do because we have done it before. And we will do it again. We use our power. We organize, mobilize. We educate. We advocate. Our power has never come from having an easy path."

The award honors Kamala Harris' "unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the betterment of our society," according to Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP's national board of directors.

She continued her speech by saying, "While we have no illusions about what we are up against in this chapter in our American story, this chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office nor by the wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by you. Written by us. By we the people."

Her words and presence were received with a standing ovation, leaving the audience moved while giving viewers something to ponder.
